Basilic Restaurant, a romantic gem hidden on teensy Balboa Island in Newport Beach California, offers quaint and cozy touch of Europe. This intimate and romantic 24-seat restaurant offers first-rate Continental cuisine and is an absolute treasure thanks to chef-owner Bernard Althaus who brings an earnest French sensibility to his exquisite cuisine. At home he harvests his own garden to produce the fresh herbs used in his dishes (by the way, the name Basilic is actually the French word for basil- Althaus' favorite herb for seasoning) and grows the organic, heirloom tomatoes found in the seasonal Special Salad. Every morning Bernard Althaus stops by the local Farmer's Market to get fresh and organic produce. Fresh herbs and organic produce are infused into dishes like the oven-roasted duck, braised chicken and roasted lamb. In the kitchen, he sees to every dish to order, making sure each plate is served to perfection from the Swiss Onion Soup, the John Dory Filet, to the creme brulee.

One of the top Newport Beach French restaurants, Basilic features superb menu of outstanding Swiss French "classics", including authentic raclette. The menu changes seasonally and as new ideas and aspirations come to Bernard. Specials such as the soupe du jour and the salade speciale, as well as a fish and a viande specials change on a nightly basis. A special dessert is also featured nightly.

Basilic Restaurant offers an impressive wine list along with a special "White and Red Wine of the Month" available by the glass or bottle featuring exclusive and unique wines for your tasting pleasure. Bluewater Grill Seafood Restaurant & Oyster Bar

Le Quai

Average price: $50-$80
Recommended For: Romantic
Address: 2816 LaFayette Ave., Newport Beach, California 92663 Phone: (949)673-9463

Very few places can be proud of such a unique combination of special-occasion glamour and intimacy as Le Quai, a charming waterfront patio restaurant. This rather small eatery, which is wedged into a crowded neighborhood in Newport Beach right near the water, is casually elegant and comfortable. Tuscan orange Cabanas, awnings, heaters, and custom booths create a casual, elegant atmosphere.

Along with traditional table reservations, visitors may also book Le Quai's 21' luxury electric boat "Le Bateau" for a chatered Harbor Cruise, complete with a captain as a personal guide. They also have a private dock reserved for those diners who arrive via electric boats and small craft.

The menu is diverse and inventive. Le Quai is the only restaurant in the country with fresh Wolffish, and the only restaurant west of Texas with Strube Ranch Beef from Strube Ranch in Pittsboro, Texas. Entrees include slightly more than a handful of options, including Fruit de Mer, which is a bowl of gifts from the sea crowned with whatever fish is freshest that day. The dish features thick planks of the mild ocean fish atop the well-filled bowl of large shell-on clams, shrimp and scallops that are sweet and tender, all simmering in a translucent bowl of buttery broth. Don't miss the Ahi Tuna served on a long rectangular plate in a tangy soy and Dijon sauce.

Colorado Lamb Sirloin, served in slender medallions, is the specialty of the restaurant. The sweet meat is given a modern Moroccan treatment and there's a swath of tangy preserved lemon yogurt painted across the center of the large square plate, as well as a knot of marinated carrots.

Desserts aren't complicated, but good, especially rich and creamy Chocolate Mousse served in soft balls with vanilla ice cream. In summer be sure to try Peach Trifle, a really delicious seasonal treat.
