Valentino is a very good choice for a really special dinner, particularly if you are passionate about wine. Renowned as one of the country's top Italian restaurants, Valentino has a truly awe-inspiring wine list. With nearly 2,800 labels on 130 pages, backed by a cellar overflowing with nearly 100,000 bottles, this restaurant is just heaven for wine-lovers. For more than 3 decades the world-renowned restaurateur Piero Selvaggio has greeted guests and helped guide them through this impressive wine list. In the 1970s, he introduced L.A. to his exquisite modern Italian cuisine, and he continues to impress guests with dishes like a timballo of wild mushrooms with rich Parmigiano-Reggiano-saffron fonduta, squid ink-tinted risotto with Maine lobster, a memorable osso buco, and sautéed branzino with lemon emulsion. A rich Barolo is a perfect accompaniment to rosemary-infused roasted rabbit; and the fantastically fragrant risotto with white truffles is probably one of the most magnificent dishes you can have. Please, be aware that jackets are required in this elegant dining room.

If you are looking for more casual dining experience there is new V-vin wine bar for wine tasting, crudo, and carpaccio.

The menu changes regularly, but you might find a roast beet salad with grilled radicchio and onion marmalade, pumpkin risotto with sea urchin and sweet Maine shrimp, and a beautiful plate of foie gras served with pistachio-cocoa nib crust and a dab of huckleberry compote. Upscale interpretations of nostalgic favorites like maple-caramel doughnuts, cookies and milk highlight the irresistible dessert menu. Discover the true spirit of California cuisine celebrated in this elegant dining room with a wraparound patio. Chef Quinn Hatfield specializes in market-driven dishes like Arctic char in a leek froth, and date- and mint-crusted rack of lamb following a whimsical, not-to-be-missed California-style croque madame (a delightful play on the typical Parisian sandwich - hamachi and proscuitto sandwiched between buttery brioche toast, topped with a sunny-side-up quail egg). The French-California menu isn't very big but it changes every week, not completely, but enough that frequent diners can find something new and appealing.

Delicious desserts are created by Quinn's wife, Karen, whose culinary masterpieces include chocolate-peanut butter truffle cake and sugar- and spice-dusted beignets paired with a frothy shot of milkshake. Tender, yeasty puffs dusted with sugar and cinnamon are served warm with a crock of Venezuelan chocolate fondue for dipping, and a petit shot of sassafras milkshake. Her buttermilk panna cotta has an entrancing delicacy.

Josie

Average price: $80
Recommended For: Business
Address: 2424 Pico Blvd., Santa Monica, Los Angeles, CA, 90405 Phone: (310) 581-9888

The interior design of this high-end restaurant is done in understated taupe hues. The mixture of the rustic and the refined is evident in every room of this cosmopolitan establishment with generously spaced tables. With the sand-blasted wooden ceiling beams, the modern skylight, the hand-crafted stone hearth and the tailored lines of the furnishings, the sophisticated décor is a perfect palette for Le Balch's imaginative menu featuring dishes like "campfire trout" cooked in a cast-iron skillet, venison ragout, and signature buffalo burger with truffle fries. Her passion for quality is readily apparent in her ingredients: the hazelnuts in her roasted beet salad are organically grown in Oregon, the wild rice is hand-harvested and the elk comes from a ranch in the Rockies.

Chef Josie's uncomplicated menu clearly reflects her healthy approach to eating as well as her passion for flavor-rich combinations. She has developed an original mix of classic cuisine and comfort foods, such as the enticing Pan Seared Duck with Savory Hawthorn Berry Sauce to the homey rib-eye steak with Pop's Peppercorn Sauce.
