Yachats Pics

The name Yachats, pronounced Yah-hots, is derived from the Alsi Indian word that means “dark water at the foot of the mountain”. This name vividly describes the picturesque setting of the village of Yachats, with the thick evergreen forest on the hillside and the crashing waves of the Pacific at its base. The beautiful surroundings are really impressive. The tiny river flows into the surf on the South and steep forested mountains lie on the East.

The village stands on the rocky shoreline, with little coves and many tide pools offering hours of exploration. But it is not only the stunning visual splendor of this coastal landscape that keeps visitors coming back. Add uncrowded beaches, comfortable motels and good restaurant and you will get an ideal setting for a quiet, getaway vacation.

Looming over Yachats is Cape Perpetua, at 800' elevation, the highest point on the Oregon Coast. Visitors can drive two miles past the visitor center to the viewpoint. On a clear day, you can see a panoramic view of 150 miles of the Oregon coast. There is a short loop trail around the cape summit, which leads back to the visitor center. Within the Cape Perpetua Scenic Area you can find 18 miles of hiking trails, tide pools, scenic overlooks, ancient forests and a campground.

If you appreciate simple pleasures and want to stay close to nature, choose Shamrock Lodgettes, the collection of classic log cabins at the mouth of the Yachats River, as your residence in Yachats. Each log cabin features a tile entry, hardwood floors, a stone fireplace and a kitchenette. With spacious lawns and big fir-trees surrounding the rustic cabins, you can’t but feel the old-fashioned charm that begs you to forget all your troubles. The motel rooms are more comfortable and feature fireplaces and picturesque views.

Yachats is one of the few ocean beach areas where smelt come ashore to spawn. During the second Saturday in July, Yachats has a tasty smelt fry, where they serve more than 500 lbs. of the silver fish.

There are many restaurants in Yachats for every type of budget, ranging from take away to specialty gourmet dining. Wild mushroom cuisine is featured at the Yachats Village Mushroom Fest, held in October. The festival features mushroom walks, mushroom exhibits and identification, as well as music and entertainment.

Other recreational activities to enjoy include beachcombing, clamming, hiking and camping. There are several small campgrounds, and even a bike camp area, within a few minutes of downtown Yachats. They include Neptune State Park, Ten Mile Creek, the Forest Service campground at Cape Perpetua Scenic Area, and Rock Creek.
