Heceta Head Lighthouse Photo

Heceta Head Lighthouse, the most photographed lighthouse of Oregon, stands at the tip of a scenic, forested cape. Towering 205 feet above the ocean, this lighthouse features a rotating Fresnel lens with 640 glass prisms, mounted in a 56-foot tower, visible 20 miles out to sea. Now the lighthouse is operated automatically, so it is open for visitors, with seasonal guided tours starting at the beach parking area.

Soak up the breathtaking beauty of this historic (and haunted!) lighthouse. There is also the Heceta Light Station, a white clapboard, 1893 duplex that once housed the two assistant light keepers. Still allegedly haunted by a young woman named Rue, the building is now a fabulously scenic bed and breakfast inn with six rooms. Called Heceta House, this 1893 Queen Anne-style residence is now a Historic Landmark.

To enjoy a close-up view of both structures, walk along a picturesque 0.5-mile trail that will reveal excellent seascapes South, which include the bridge, park and the rock. You can see many birds here, including cormorants, surf scoters and tufted puffins.

Embracing scenic Cape Cove and bounded by 1,000 foot-high Heceta Head on the North, Heceta Head Lighthouse State Scenic Viewpoint, located in a lovely cove at the mouth of Cape Creek, offers gorgeous views of Cape Creek flowing under concrete dark arch bridge, Cape Creek Bridge, and Devil’s Elbow Beach, with scattered picnic tables that provide visual pleasures while the visitors enjoy their meals.
