Las Vegas

Vegas Photos

Las Vegas is the biggest city in the state of Nevada, with treeless mountains forming a scenic backdrop to hotels awash in neon glitter.

You must have seen it millions of times on TV or in a movie, but still, you will be totally unprepared for the first sight of Las Vegas. With skylines of super reality, mélange of the Stature of Liberty, a giant lion, a pyramid and constantly glittering buildings, there is no other city like Las Vegas in America or elsewhere in the world.

In other cities, hotels are built around major attractions, here, in Las Vegas, hotels are major attractions. With the skyline made up of buildings from other cities’ skylines, Las Vegas buildings tend to replicate some other reality – ancient Egypt, Paris, Venice and New York. But the biggest draw of the city is naturally casinos with their non-stop action and sound, and almost blinding lights. Gambling is the main attraction of this place and you are bound to come across casinos and slot machines nearly everywhere you go.

When in Las Vegas, the first thing you should do is to take a stroll along the Strip, officially known as Las Vegas Boulevard South. This is where you will see a glowing pyramid, a gleaming huge brass lion, a volcano, a mini version of New York City, the sights of Paris and Venice and more, all in one day. Amazing. But do it at night, when the lights turn it all into something magical. It is like nothing you have seen before – a façade of a façade with lots of neon on it. These enormously huge hotels are all about grand elegance, presenting plenty of gawking opportunities.

Las Vegas The Hotel

The major attractions in Las Vegas are the casinos. The most famous hotel casinos are located on Las Vegas Boulevard, better known as the Las Vegas Strip. Many of these hotels are massive, carrying thousands of rooms, with their large adjoining casino areas. There are many hotel casinos in the city's downtown area as well. Some of the most notable casinos involved in downtown gaming are on the Fremont Street Experience which was granted variances to allow bars to be closer together, similar to the Gaslamp Quarter of San Diego.

But casinos aren’t the only attraction of Las Vegas. Besides official casino hotels, there are hotel built specifically as alternatives to casino hotels, for example, Mandalays Bay’s The Hotel and the Venetian’s Venezia tower, so the visitors now have swell pools, lush spas and some of the best restaurants of the country.

Many of the Las Vegas hotels provide free entertainment. The best one and definitely not to be missed are the fountains of Bellagio, which rise and fall in choreographed rhythms to tunes from Sinatra to opera during the day and part of the night. You will also see the Mirage’s volcano "explodes" and Treasure Island’s pirates battle scantily clad "sirens". The Mirage’s features one of the finest manicured habitats of the bottlenose dolphins. So seeing dolphins in the desert is a reality and watching them frolic and even toss a ball is the best attraction in Vegas.

Besides fabulously opulent lush hotels, Las Vegas has got access to some marvelous hiking with awe-inspiring rock formations in Red Rock Canyon. You can also have water fun on Lake Mead, enjoy breathtaking desert vistas of Valley of the Fire State Park, and marvel the engineering and architectural genius at Hoover Dam. Back in town there are plenty of shows, some of them are one of the best in the world. There is even Liberace Museum with real masterpieces. The Southern Nevada Zoological-Botanical Park, also known as the Las Vegas Zoo, exhibits over 150 species of animals and plants.

You may even have one of the meals of your life in Las Vegas, with many of the most prominent chefs of the country attracted to this site. From Food Network favorites such as Puck and Emeril, to Jean-Georges, Julian Serrano, and more, they are considered one of the finest chefs alive.

Las Vegas also hosts some cultural events as well. On the first Friday of each month, the "First Friday" celebration is held which exhibits the works of local artists and musicians in a section of the city's Downtown region now called the "Arts District".

The $485 million Smith Center for the Performing Arts (currently under construction) will be located downtown in Symphony Park. The center will be appropriate for Broadway shows and other major touring attractions as well as orchestra, opera, and dance performances.

Of course, there is not as much of cultural vacation in Las Vegas as in other big cities. You will visit museums and historical sights in real Paris, Venice and New York. Las Vegas is all about fun. Go and have some. It won’t be hard.
