Best Things To Do In Oahu

Oahu Ocean

Many people are drawn to the excitement of the Hawaiian island of Oahu, beautiful and diverse. Known as "The Gathering Place", it is the third largest of the Hawaiian Islands and the most populous one, with the state’s capital Honolulu, located on the Southeast coast. What distinguishes Oahu is its metropolitan lifestyle and a great human traffic. Being the hub of the island commerce, government, education, tourism and arts, Oahu gained the reputation of the world-class travel destination.

Anyone is sure to find something to enjoy there, including adventure trips, romantic vacation, activities for the whole family and, of course, cultural attractions. Island activities range from surfing lessons and canoeing to swimming with dolphins and scuba diving.

There is a wide spectrum of water sports and land activities available for thrill and adventure seekers on Oahu. If you are a sun loving person and want to spend your vacation on the beach, try surfing, windsurfing or scuba diving in Waikiki. Numerous tour operators offer transportation to and from Waikiki so that you can enjoy the countryside on your way to adventures like helicopter and glider tours, ultra light and skydiving experiences, kayaking tours, shark excursions, ATV and horseback rides. Land adventures available here include hiking through rainforests, biking along mountain ranges, parasailing and parachuting. You can rent outrigger canoes, surfboards and other gear right on the beach. Those visitors who admire tennis, archery and jogging would admire Kapiolani Park.

Oahu Beachfront

Actually, the island’s 112 miles of the coastline is densely packed with more than 130 beaches, strands of golden sand that go down gently into the sapphire-blue water of the warm Pacific. A popular South Shore beach is in Hanauma Bay Nature Park. This place is great for snorkeling and sunbathing and that is why it is always very crowded. If you travel further in the Eastern direction you will come across a rugged swell-splashed coastline interrupted first by Sandy Beach and then by Makapu'u. Both beaches are beautiful, but somewhat treacherous, as lifeguards rescue more people at these two beaches than anywhere else in Hawaii. Down the highway to Waimanalo Town you will find Waimanalo Bay Recreational Center and Beach Park, a 4-mile streak of generally safe, always beautiful white sand beach. Kailua Bay, a favorite windsurfing and sailing location, features three miles of sand, small shore breaks for the beginning bodysurfer, windsurfing lessons and relatively deserted strands of beach.

Along the coast to the North Shore are several unique beach parks - Kualoa, Kahana, Hau'ula and Mala'ekahana, all heavenly beautiful and not crowded except on weekends. Next come Oahu's major surf spots, known as the "7 Mile Miracle" which stretch from Sunset Beach to Haleiwa. These beaches include Rocky Point, Ehukai Beach Park, Pupukea and Waimea Bay. During winter months, waves may be up to 25 feet high making these beaches definitely dangerous and off limits to casual swimmers. But then, you can always watch the big wave riders.

Oahu is a great place for a family vacation, not to mention the opportunities to make romantic dreams come true. There is a wide array of children's programs at Waikiki Beach hotels, and a variety of water sports. The Honolulu Zoo, the Waikki Aquarium and Sea Life Park are just some of the attractions both kids and grown-ups can enjoy. If you prefer enjoying some quiet time by yourself relaxing on the beach or at a health spa, many hotels offer children's programs that are both fun and educational and may be half- and full-day ones.

Oahu Nature

Waikiki Beach is shallow enough and the water is calm most of the year, especially in the winter when the surf stays under two feet. Certain parts of the beach have a life guard on duty watching over swimmers and surfers. The newlyweds and couples will find a lot up to their exquisite tastes if prefer to stay at the luxurious hotels and lush condominiums with magnificent ocean views and superior service. If you have never tasted pink beer or pink champagne, Mai Tai Bar is the place to go.

For all visitors interested in the Hawaiian culture and customs, Oahu offers a big selection of museums, historical attractions and interactive exhibits. The Polynesian Cultural Center on the North Shore of Oahu offers villages and other historical artifacts inspired by the Polynesian culture. Kualoa Ranch, Hawaiian Water Adventure Park near Kapolei, and the Arizona Memorial are worth seeing. When in Honolulu, visit Iolani Palace, the Mission Houses Museum and view the King Kamehameha Statue. If you are interested in Hawaiian art, the Hawaii State Art Museum exhibits pieces of fine art by Hawaiian artists from the 1960s to the present. Walking tours of downtown Honolulu, Waikiki or Chinatown, as well as a visit to Pearl Harbor, are also a good way to get in touch with the island's unique past.
