Lahaina Banyan Tree Park Photo

If you happen to visit downtown Lahaina, you are sure to come across Banyan Tree. If you did not plan on walking downtown Lahaina, you should change your plans so that you can see this magnificent landmark. This is definitely a sight that's not to be missed. The tree is well over 100 years old, and will probably last for several hundred more years. It is 60 feet high and covers 200 feet of space. With 12 trunks and several hundred drooping branches, it resembles a miniature jungle rather than a tree. Locals make crafts under its shade, boys swing from the branches and tourists gaze in amazement.

This incredible tree has been growing here since 1873, when it was first planted by Christian missionaries to honor the 50th anniversary of their work in Lahaina. The tree was imported from India and was just 8 feet tall. The huge tree is hard to miss if you're walking downtown, as it towers over 60 feet tall, stretches over a 200-foot area, and has 12 major offshoot trunks in addition to its central core. It grows sideways and its roots dangle from the tree searching for new anchoring points becoming new trunks. The tree is well-groomed as caring members of the local community carefully maintain the symmetrical shape of the Banyan Tree. This particular tree is one of the largest Indian Banyan trees in the world and is the largest in the USA. Feel free to come and sit under the tree in the shade on one of its numerous benches scattered about - it's a wonderful place to relax, have a snack and enjoy the warm air of the beautiful island of Maui.

Actually, the Banyan Tree Caravan Park is a small family business with friendly and attentive staff working. The park is located in a quiet rural area and there is an eating house that serves a wide range of meals including the famous Banyan Burger. You can enjoy a delicious meal under the shade of a 200 year old banyan tree.

The tree is not the only thing that is worth seeing in the park. Hawaiian artists and craftsmen display and sell their works of art and crafts. There is a great variety of jewelry handmade from seeds, nuts, beads, glass, also carved wooden bowls, pottery, woven baskets, unique and colorful paintings, original photographs that is available for sale. This is also the place where fairs take place and then the assortment of crafts being sold is just striking. In addition to that Hawaiian music is featured live there. It’s a perfect place for a family holiday get away.
