If outdoor activities are high in your agenda of your visit to San Diego and you are looking for wild times, the world-famous San Diego Zoo will supply them. With more than 4,000 creatures residing here and 700 000 plants of its lavish botanical garden, San Diego Zoo is one of the most popular and famous zoos in the world.

This celebrated and influential zoo is one of only four in the United States featuring giant pandas as well as other rare species, such as Buerger’s tree kangaroos of New Guinea, ling-billed kiwis from New Zealand, wild Przewalski’s horses from Mongolia, lowland gorillas from Africa and giant tortoises of Galapagos.

San Diego Zoo plays a significant role in animal preservation activities around the world. Run by Zoological society of San Diego, it gas engineered many “firsts” in animal breeding. San Diego Zoo is known to be a forerunner in creating barless, moated enclosures allowing animals to roam in the environments that resemble their natural habitat.

Be sure not to miss the newest and the largest habitat – Monkey Trails and Forest Tales. Being the most elaborate in the zoo’s history, in fact, it re-creates a wooded forest inhabited by rare species, including the mandrill monkey, clouded leopard and pygmy hippopotamus.

Due to the elevated trail through the treetops, it is possible to closely observe the primates, birds and plants thriving in the forest canopy. You can watch orangutans and black-furred gibbons of Indonesia in Absolutely Apes as well as two troops of Western lowland gorillas in an 800-square-foot habitat of Gorilla Tropics.

In addition to the Panda Discovery center, other highlights of the ongoing $26 million project include Tiger River which is a steep gorge surrounded by lush enclosures for fishing cats, tapirs and tigers. Especially noteworthy is Ituri Forest simulating a central African rainforest with forest buffalos, otters, okapis and hippos roaming which are viewed underwater from a glassed-in enclosure.

San Diego Zoo Bear

The Polar Bear Plunge is also worth observing that features summer tundra habitat full of Siberia reindeer, yellow-throated martens and, of course, polar bears. Polar Bear Plunge is one of the most famous highlights at the San Diego zoo. With over 30 species in this area of the zoo, Polar Bear Plunge houses animals representing the arctic. The main animals in the area are the polar bears, Kalluk, Chinook and Tatqiq.

Another animal that makes its home in Polar Bear Plunge is the reindeer or caribou. Having walked down polar bear path, you will find an underwater viewing area making it possible to view the polar bears swimming. Further down the path lies the arctic aviary, home to the diving ducks. Some of the diving ducks are buffleheads, harlequin's duck, the smew and long-tailed ducks. The aviary houses more than 25 species of duck. The last stop on the Polar journey is to look at the two cat species in the area, a Pallas cat and a Serval. Some of the horticultural highlights of this area include giant redwood trees, diverse pine trees, and manzanita.

San Diego Zoo Elephants

Kids will admire the Children’s Zoo featuring a nursery with baby animals and a petting area where kids may cuddle up to sheep, goats and the like. If you don’t feel like walking a lot, think of taking a 35-minute Guided Bus Tour which provides a descriptive overview and nearly 75 percent of the territory coverage. Or you may just as well get an aerial perspective from the Skyfari, but you may fail to see many of the animals in that case.

San Diego Zoo Giraffe

The San Diego Zoo also operates the San Diego Zoo's Wild Animal Park, which displays animals in a more expansive area than at the zoo. Animals are regularly transferred between both parks, as well as other zoos around the world, usually due to Species Survival Plan recommendations.

The cool, sunny maritime climate is well suited to many plants and animals. In addition to having an extensive collection of birds, reptiles and mammals, San Diego Zoo also maintains its grounds as an arboretum, with a unique plant collection. As part of its gardening effort, it raises some rare animal foods as well.

For instance, the zoo raises 40 varieties of bamboo for the pandas and maintains 18 varieties of eucalyptus trees to feed its koalas.

Besides numerous fast food options within San Diego Zoo, the restaurant Albert’s offers nice dining and is actually lovely place to have a little rest at the lip of a canyon.
