Stroll through the King of the Missions – Mission San Luis Rey de Francia, Oceanside, which is the largest in the chain of 21 throughout the state. With major renovation under way, pay special attention to a re-created lavanderia and new interpretive gardens.

San Diego Zoo deserves a special attention with its new $44 million habitat set to open this spring featuring Elephant Odyssey that will house relatives of creatures that inhabited Southern California 100 years ago: Asian elephants, lions and wild horses.

If traveling with children, take them to LEGOLAND California Resort in Carlsbad. Here, in the new Land of Adventure they could check out the 16-foot-tall Pharaoh and temples which are all made of plastic bricks. Another reason to visit LEGOLAND is the new SEALIFE Aquarium next door.

The second largest city in California, San Diego is also an urban playground, which attracts out-of-towners and locals alike to the high-end restaurants and late night music scene along Fifth Avenue in the Gaslamp Quarter, baseball fans to PETCO Park and culture and arts lovers to numerous world-class theatres and museums. Take your kids to the New Children’s Museum just recently opened in San Diego. The innovative hands on exhibits of this museum will encourage children to think, play and create. Balboa Park San Diego

USS Midway Museum in San Diego is also worth visiting, with its new permanent exhibit telling about how President Teddy Roosevelt’s Great White Navy Feet came to San Diego and created the largest navy complex in the world.

Oceanside Museum of Art features the new Central Pavilion expansion which is a two-story modernist gem. The art lovers will gaze at everything here, from classic landscape paintings to neon sculpture and art quilts.

Escape to Torrey Pines State Reserve featuring the rarest pine tree in North America. The bluff-side reserve has short trails that immerse hikers into magnificent and stunningly beautiful rare coastal environment.

Stroll through the Gaslamp Quarter in the very heart of downtown, with beautifully restored buildings housing some of the most popular shops and restaurants of the city. This is the place where Victorian commercial buildings will make you think you have stepped back in time.

Chug along Poway Midland Railroad through Old Poway Park aboard a lovingly restored locomotive, trolley or coach.

Take the Ferry to Coronado and enjoy this exciting 15-minute ride providing some of the best views of the city. The ferry runs every hour from the Broadway Pier, so you can tour Coronado on foot, by bus or by trolley whenever you please.

Listen to free Sunday Organ Recitals in Balboa Park and enjoy wonderful outdoor concerts and the crowds they draw. The live music runs the gamut from classical to contemporary.

Watch the seals at the Children’s Pool in La Jolla. These days, the sand of this tiny La Jolla cove is off-limits to humans, so you can get surprisingly close to these wonderful creatures and watch their playful behavior.
