Lake Perris

Lake Perris

Lake Perris recreational area has a little bit of something for everyone. There is a bounty of outdoor opportunities like fishing and boating, with rentals available at the marina, as well as hiking, biking and horseback riding trails. There is also a Native American museum which is open on Wednesdays and weekends and a couple of swimming beaches and waterside. Boating to Alessandro Island to have a romantic picnic is considered by many to be a Lake Perris rite-of-passage.

It is a pretty park as well, with lush grassy turf that slopes down to the water and rocky hills framing the horizon. It is a real pleasure to relax here under the shadows of conifers, eucalyptus and pepper trees and enjoy spacious open sites. In spring a fabulous explosion of wildflowers make this picturesque place a must-see. With many varieties of desert wildflowers blooming, including goldfields, California poppy, fiddleneck, baby blue eyes and blue dicks, this area becomes quite alive and lovely. However, any time of the year is nice here, especially at sunset.

Lake Perris State Recreational Area also offers a network of scenic trails, the most popular of which is the trek to Terry Peak, the most romantic spot in all the surrounding hills. The view from Terry Peak on smog-free days is just fantastic.

Hiking the trail, you will come across coastal scrub community, with sage, buckwheat, chamise and toyon predominating. The trail ascents to a small flat meadow, turns and then climbs to the peak. From atop Terry Peak, you can enjoy gorgeous views of the San Bernardino Mountains, the Santa Ana Mountains and the fast growing Moreno Valley sprawled beneath. You can also see all of Lake Perris and Alessandro Island along with plenty of boaters and swimmers.

From Terry Peak the trail leads down to the Indian Museum which features exhibits interpreting the Luiseno, Cahuilla, Serrano and other desert tribes and how they adjusted to life in the Mojave Desert region.
