Surrounded by glacier-carved peaks that soar up from the meadows filled with flowers, Mammoth Lakes is the alpine area of sweeping beauty, and one of the most favorite playgrounds in all California ideal for hiking, biking, horseback riding, skiing and more. It is also home to one of the top-rated ski resorts in the world – Mammoth Mountain which usually gets more snow than any other place in the Sierra. At an elevation of 11,053 feet, Mammoth Mountain is higher than either Squaw or Heavenly, so the snow stays firm longer into the year for fantastic skiing.

There is no better place on earth to ski than Mammoth Mountain, the tallest ski resort in California, blessed with more than 300 days of sunshine a year and more than 400 inches of annual snowfall. Here winter sticks around for a long time allowing the season to start in November and last until June. Some people come to Mammoth for its 150 trails, others for its 3,100 feet of vertical. Whether hitting the slopes or just exploring its 3,500 acres of terrain, you are bound to have an exciting and unforgettable vacation in Mammoth Mountain.

Mammoth Mountain Ropeway

The Mammoth Mountain Ski Area is the central focus for winter and summer activities. In winter, Mammoth Mountain has more than 3,500 skiable acres, a 3,100-foot vertical drop, 150 trails (32 with snowmaking), and 30 lifts, including seven high-speed quads. The terrain is 30% beginner, 40% intermediate and 30% advanced. It is known for power sun, ideal spring skiing conditions and from 8 to 12 feet of snow anywhere. You can ride the lifts to see breathtaking panoramic vistas, but those who prefer an active adventure have many options. If you hit the slopes in winter, you can use the free Mammoth Area Shuttle, or Express Sierra taxi service for transportation between town and the ski area. The state-of-the art Panorama Gondola provides great viewing every day, all year round, if the weather permits. The gondola carries eight passengers and stops midway up the mountain and at the summit with 360-degree views, perhaps the most stunning views you will find in California. In summer you can use gondola to reach the hiking and biking trails on the mountain.

Skiing and snowboarding are not all winter fun in Mammoth Mountain. If you can't imagine your pastime without speed go snowmobiling. Prefer canine power to horse power? Try a dogsled ride. Or hang out with your kids on a snowtube. The opportunities for winter fun are endless.

Mammoth Mountain Hotel

Summer at Mammoth offers just as many thrills as winter. In summer visitors can enjoy a jaw-dropping mountain setting and consistently warm, sunny weather. In summer the mountain turns into one huge bike park and climbing playground. The bike park is famous for its Kamikaze Downhill Trail, an obstacle arena and slalom course where adrenalin seeking bikers can test their balance and skill. Plenty of other trails will suit gentler visitors who may just want to commune with nature and get a little exercise, and one area is designed for kids. Bike shuttles will haul you and your bike to the lower mountain trails if you want to skip the uphill part, or the gondola will take you to the summit and let you find your own way down.
