With dozens of motels, restaurants and mini malls lining busy Highway 50, South Lake Tahoe, unlike other lake towns, boasts the loveliest nightlife on the lake as well as gambling in Stateline, just across the Nevada border, and world-class skiing in Heavenly. But the premier sight of the area is naturally the lake, shimmering softly in myriad shades of blue and green, one of the most beautiful lakes in the USA. Surrounded by the magnificent peaks of the Sierra Nevada, its water reflects the colors of the sky and mountains, creating a kaleidoscope of sparkling blue, green and purple hues, - a sight that will lure you back again and again.

The sun shines in Tahoe three out of four days in the year, making it ideal for outdoor pursuits of all sorts. Swimming, boating, kayaking, windsurfing and other water-based activities are popular here, as are hiking and camping among the horned peaks of the lake. In summer you can also partake of bicycling, golf, tennis, ballooning, horseback riding, rock climbing, bungee jumping, parasailing and so on, - the possibilities are plentiful. Whether your style is mountain biking or skinny tire riding, the choices available for biking in South Lake Tahoe are nearly endless. For an easy spin you may take the South Lake Tahoe Bike Path which heads West from EI Dorado Beach, while the steep downhill sections and banked turns of the classic Mr. Toads Wild Ride should provide enough challenge for expert mountain bikers.

And finally, there are sleigh riding and sledding, maybe the most unusual way to experience the Blue World, in a sled behind a team of dogs racing through a pine forest and then bursting into a mountain meadow.
